Conferences
I went to Sophia’s conference at daycare yesterday. (Yes, it still makes me laugh that they have conferences this young. But honestly, I like it. I get some good information.) All went very well, which is what I expected since I talk with the teachers on a daily basis. But here are some things I learned:
— She’s ready to start reading! (Holy cow!) They said she is very visual and can recognize everyone in the classrooms name. I asked how to start the reading process, and they told me to have a card with a word on it (like “cow”) then put a cow on the card and tell her “cow.” They told me not to do it phoenetically because she is so visual it’ll just screw her up.
— She holds a pencil correctly! Again, I’m surprised. I knew she held it close to correct, but she does it all the way. They suggested I get a little tray and put colored sand in it. I should write a letter in the sand with my finger, and have her trace it. It’ll expose her to writing her letters, and give her the experience with texture.
— She is very compassionate. They have a girl in her room with a genetic defect that causes tubes in grow in her heart and lungs. She’s had many surgeries, and her development is that of an 18 month old. Apparently Sophia is great with her. She helps her in the activities, and knows enough to move away if the girl starts hitting her. (Instead of running to the teacher to tell on her.) She actively plays with her and helps her. I’m so proud!
— She is a great helper in the classroom. She’ll help clean up even before asked. (Now, why doesn’t she do this at home?)
— She’s the comedian in the classroom. She comes up with random statements that crack them up. (I know this, but wasn’t sure if others felt the same way. After all, I’m a bit biased as she IS my daughter!)
All in all, they said she’s a joy to have in their classroom and will miss her next year when she moves to pre-school. I’m so glad and so proud of who she is. I hope she continues with all of the above.

You should be proud! You have an awesome little girl, Cyn!
